窯で加熱され真っ赤になった鉄の塊から、ハンマーで叩きながら形を整えて造り出す...「鍛造」と呼ばれる日本で古来より伝えられてきた刃物の製法です。

刀をはじめ、庖丁、鉈、鎌、鋏など、あらゆる刃物がそんな伝統の製法で造られてきた日本ですが、近年はステンレス鋼を打ちぬいた製法による刃物が多くなり「鍛造」の刃物を製造するのは日本でもごく一部の地域のみとなっております。

そんな僅かに残された伝統の技術で「剣鉈」を造る、土佐のレッドオルカ。

一度レッドオルカの剣鉈を使用すると、他のものは使いものにならない、と言って猟師が捨ててしまう程の、まさに実用のために造られた刃物です。

レッドオルカ、三代目となる秋友義彦氏は、元来、日本刀を造る製法のひとつである「甲伏せ造り」を実現。硬く軽く折れない「甲伏せ造り」の剣鉈はレッドオルカの代名詞となっています。

RedOrca employs a traditional Japanese style of forging called Tanzo in which yellow hot iron mass is hammered into a shape of a knife.

Most Japanese knives including Katana, kitchen knives, hatchets, scissors among others were made by this technique but the method has been replaced over the past decades and today only few craftsmen use this method in a limited districts in Japan.

One of them is RedOrca in Kochi Prefecture. Akitomo is proud of the technique and keeps it in his making of Ken-nata.

"Once you use RedOrca Ken-nata, you will never return to use others for your job" claims many professional hunters.

Akitomo developed his original method of Kobuse to craft his works and now the method has become a synonym for RedOrca' Ken-nata.
